❖ RIDING THE HOOK AT TATOOSH ISLAND, WA. ❖

William A. Clifton, coastguardsman stationed at
the Cape Flattery Light on Tatoosh Island, and his wife,
were hoisted from a boat to the top of a cliff in a
canvas-sided basket. They were returning from a weekend off.
Riding the "hook," as they call it, was part of life at Tatoosh.
Photo dated December 1971.

This view of Tatoosh Island from the top of the lighthouse,
shows spacious quarters for families, built in the 1930s.
There are also newer residences. The boom, that hoists visitors
and cargo up the cliff is in the background.
Photo same date as above, December 1971.

  1. Would like permission to post a copy of the Tatoosh Island photos on my Ancestry.com tree. Grandpa, using the name G. G. Benson, was an electrician and telegrapher at the naval station there at least occasionally between about 1910 and 1912. It was while he was at Tatoosh Island that he met Grandma, the daughter of the BIA school teacher to the Neah Bay Agency.
