King's Truck Falls Overboard

"One evening last week, the Lyle King livestock truck, while loading on the ferry bound from Shaw Island to Friday Harbor, went overboard and now lies in 30-ft of water. Three cows and two hogs were drowned. Two calves and three hogs were able to free themselves and swim to shore.
The accident was caused when the truck was being taken aboard the ferry. According to information, the end of the pontoon on which rested the apron from the deck, settled and pulled away sufficiently from the dock to allow the truck to fall into the water.
The well-known Mr. King, was not in the truck at the time of the accident."
Friday Harbor Journal, 12 January 1933.
Locals have made many guesses at the year of this event. One archivist is happy to have the date documented. Often it was Mabel Fowler Crawford who submitted news reports from the hub of Shaw Island, to the Journal newspaper, but she didn't initial this report.
